If your child cannot feed properly, they may have ankyloglossia, also known as a tongue-tie. This is a physical condition that is present at birth and limits the movement of the tongue when tissue that attaches the tongue to the lingual frenulum (bottom of the mouth) is too short. An infant that has a tongue-tie cannot move their tongue properly to drink a sufficient amount of milk during feeding. As a result, the infant may remain hungry and weight loss can occur if the condition is not treated early on. For parents that are less familiar with this condition, they may begin to notice speaking, feeding, and oral hygiene issues have become more apparent as their child grows older.
When the soft membrane of the tissue behind the lip tightly attaches to the upper jaw, it restricts the movement of the lip. This condition is called a lip-tie. Having a lip-tie can cause feeding issues early on and other problems in the long run, when it is left untreated. Most lip-ties are easily identified and can be treated quickly, if necessary, depending on age.
Dr. LIitano will diagnose a tongue-tie or lip-tie during a physical exam that will include a functional assessment of the patient. Some of the symptoms of a tongue-tie and/or lip-tie include:
We are dedicated to using the latest medical technology, including the Fotona Laser, to achieve better results in tongue and lip tie releases. This advanced laser system provides a gentle, precise, and less invasive option, making the patient experience more comfortable and efficient.
The Fotona Laser is different from older surgical methods as it greatly reduces bleeding, discomfort, and the risk of infection. This creates a safer environment for patients and helps them heal faster, allowing them to get back to their daily lives sooner. By avoiding scalpels and stitches, this technology leads to a smoother recovery, often reducing the need for complicated post-operative care.
Besides being safe and effective, the Fotona Laser allows for quick and efficient procedures, usually taking only a few minutes. It also requires very little anesthesia, which improves safety and enables patients of all ages, from infants to adults, to see immediate benefits in function and comfort. Whether helping a newborn with feeding or improving speech in older individuals, the Fotona Laser offers remarkable results with great precision.
By choosing this modern approach, we provide our patients with top-notch solutions that show our commitment to achieving the best health outcomes with minimal discomfort and maximum convenience.
